A Fight For Identity: How Episodes 3 and 4 of Maul:Shadow Lord Will Shape The Future of the Galaxy (and the show)

The third and fourth episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord, entitled “Whispers in the Unknown” and “Pride and Vengeance,” respectively, are some of the most compelling episodes of Star Wars animation to date in that they are not just about action or survival. They are about identity, how it is formed, and what one does to change it or abide by it, as reflected in the three main characters featured in the series: Maul, Devon, and Brander Lawson.

Each of the aforementioned characters struggles with identity in some way, more specifically by being torn between two opposing forces and trying to decide which path they will follow. Thus, each of the main characters represents a different kind of inner conflict, making these episodes a story about choice as much as battles between good and evil.

For Maul, formerly Darth Maul, the tension of identity is found in the dichotomy between holding onto past grudges and moving toward a future that he cannot see. Still defined by the wounds wrought upon him by Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, Maul lives in the shadow of betrayal, pain, and revenge. This is, unto this point in his life, all he has known. His entire identity is built around hating those who wronged him. Despite this, Maul seems to crave something beyond endless vengeance. He seeks purpose, control, and perhaps even leaving a legacy, thus his obsession with having an apprentice.

However, Maul finds himself caught in a contradiction. As it stands, Maul believes that defeating old enemies is how he moves forward. He cannot separate himself from the idea that revenge will be his saving grace, therefore trapping him in a cycle of failure, frustration, and futility. This is a pattern that audiences are well aware will continue, as he continues to seek revenge as a means of relief in Star Wars Rebels. Therefore, it is not so much a matter of if Maul will be able to break the cycle or not, but rather whether his choices will keep him in the same trap and the impact that entrapment will have on the characters he interacts with.

One of the characters who will be most affected by Maul’s struggle is Devon, the Jedi apprentice whom Maul is trying to bring under his wing. Raised by the Jedi, Devon was taught discipline, peace, and trust in the Jedi teachings. Her moral instincts come from that upbringing, but she struggles because the galaxy around her no longer fits the narrative the Jedi taught her to believe in.

Maul presents her with a different perspective, and arguably a more practical one for the time. While she primarily resists the temptation to fall into Maul’s nihilistic way of thinking, there are moments that hint that she will join the former Sith at some point. The moments of anger, frustration, and aggression that pepper these two episodes all have to lead somewhere, and that will likely be to the feet of Maul.

Devon is not simply choosing between good and evil. She is choosing between certainty and questioning, obedience and independence. Her story reflects the struggle many people face when inherited beliefs are challenged. If she decides to follow Maul instead of staying with Master Daki, Devon will not do so because she is turning evil. Rather, she will do so because she will be succumbing to Maul’s offer of clarity, power, and a worldview shaped by the harsh truth that she sees around her.

That truth is partially shaped by Brander Lawson, the lawman who is torn between his role as an officer of the law and a single father to his son, Rylee. As a man of the law, he has a duty and responsibility to represent order and justice as he tries to take down figures like Maul, who threaten the tender peace on Janix. His badge requires a certain level of sacrifice, but how much does it have to take from him?

Meanwhile, as a father, his instincts are personal and emotional, as he realizes that protecting and taking care of his son can conflict with his role of protecting the public good. Unto this point, Lawson has continually picked the law over his son, but when will the cost become too high? His answer at that time will decide his destiny, just as Maul’s and Devon’s decisions about who they want to be will impact theirs.

By the end of the show, each of these characters will have to define themselves as they choose which side of the tension they are going to lean toward, as neutrality in the era of the Empire is not an option. Thus, each will have to see where their loyalty truly lies, and in doing so they will shape one another’s decisions as well. Maul’s choices around the pain of the past or hope for the future will influence how he interacts with Devon and how he pushes back against Lawson. Devon’s decision between Maul and Daki will decide which side of the law she falls on, thus influencing the choices of Lawson and Maul. Lawson’s decisions around choosing between going after Maul and supporting his son will shape just how far he is willing to go to bring down the former Sith, and possibly his new apprentice.

In the end, the true battle of these episodes is not fought with lightsabers or blasters, but within the hearts of those caught between competing worlds. Maul must choose whether vengeance will remain his master or whether he can finally pursue something greater. Devon must decide if she will cling to the certainty of her past or embrace the dangerous clarity Maul offers. Lawson must determine whether duty to the badge outweighs duty to his son. Each stands inside a prison of their own making—pain, uncertainty, or responsibility—and whichever character breaks free first may determine not only the fate of Janix, but the direction of every life tied to them.
